In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti… RIP Trust Me

As I sat, playing out season two scenarios in my mind for our favorite art director + copywriter team of Mason and Connor, TV Guide delivered the bad news. After just one short season, Trust Me is no more.

The critically acclaimed dramedy starring Eric McCormak and Tom Cavanagh pulled small ratings right out of the gate. Which is a serious bummer. Yes, it was cheesy at times. And, yes, it didn’t have the most terribly engrossing plot lines but is that not the point of a comedy series? I mean, I was hooked. I know I wasn’t alone, either.

Say it ain't so!

So what does this mean for advertising themed programming? TV Guide suggests that AMC’s Mad Men also draws a tiny audience (though it somehow manages to stay afloat). I’ve often thought that the chaotic nature of this business lent itself perfectly to a prime-time series. Perhaps there just needs to be more of a hook. More edge. Then again, sex and violence shouldn’t be the determining factors for a new series.

The recent backlash towards advertising during this economy can’t be helping, either. You’d think we clever creatives could spin this perception. After all, isn’t that what we do?

Maybe it’s time to advertise advertising.
